What Is a Sidney Prize?

A sidney prize is a prestigious literary award that recognizes works of art and nonfiction. These prizes may require submission of work on specific topics for evaluation by an expert panel; winning works may receive both financial reward as well as publication in journals or books; some sidney prizes have eligibility restrictions tied to degree level or background, while others do not impose such constraints.

Literary Sydney prizes come in various shapes and sizes. One example is the Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, which offers its winner $5,000 as well as publication online and in Overland magazine. Judges for this year’s contest – Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop, and Sara Saleh – evaluated over 500 submissions before selecting three winners and runners-ups.

Many of the Sydney Prizes center around history, with awards like the Australian History Prize given out for work that contributes to our understanding of Australia’s past. Other renowned history prizes in Sydney are General History Prize and New South Wales Community and Regional History Prize, respectively. Other prestigious Sydney prizes that celebrate history include General History Prize and New South Wales Community and Regional History Prize as well. There are also various awards that recognize individuals for their contribution to science – these awards include Sydney Peace Prize recently given out to Black Lives Matter founders Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi.

There are also literary Sydney Prizes that honor long-form journalism and thought pieces, as well as writers like Hilton Als of The New York Times or Ed Yong of The Atlantic who are at the top of their field – these awards may be monthly, quarterly or annually given out.

Other than literary awards such as Sydney Prizes and Hillman Prizes, there are also scientific and technical writing prizes that honor scientific and technical writing. These awards may be bestowed upon anyone deemed significant contributor to a particular field and the winners are often honored with medals or plaques bearing their award name. In addition, Hillman Prizes honor journalism that is in service to society.

Sydney Prizes exist not only to recognize literary and scientific work, but also those who have made significant contributions to physics. A few awards honor those individuals whose memory should be honored through these prizes. Memorial prizes are typically given out posthumously and awarded during a ceremony conducted by the family of the person who has passed on. Some memorial prizes serve both to fund research that would otherwise not be possible, and are administered by professional organizations. Other prizes, provided by universities, may be given out as scholarships to students or researchers who have completed projects related to physics; often this scholarship includes a living expense stipend; this can be particularly helpful for those studying science who must cover all costs related to their education.
