Hong Kong’s premier newspaper won three prizes at the 19th Annual W3 Awards held in the US to honour outstanding digital media work. At Talking Post with Yonden Lhatoo won gold for its episode exploring Hong Kong’s coffin homes – cramped living arrangements forced upon poor families living on limited resources – while their video team also took home gold for their documentary entitled Into the Unknown that explores asylum seeker lives here in Hong Kong.
On March 22, it was revealed who won this year’s Asia-Pacific Heritage Prize, established in 2023 by the Society for Hong Kong Studies and sponsored by BOCHK to commemorate Hong Kong as a culturally vibrant city with deep historical links to China. This prize encourages people from diverse backgrounds to discover, learn and understand Hong Kong as a melting pot of Chinese cultures.
Five Hongkongers have been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize due to their hard work protecting freedoms and campaigning for democracy in Hong Kong. Jimmy Lai, Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan, Gwyneth Ho and Joshua Wong have been nominated by their commitment. Additionally, The Hong Kong Philharmonic Society was named Cultural Institution of the Year, while DDB Group Hong Kong took home multiple Effie Awards including Grand Effie honors for McDonald’s ads as well as Client of the Year honors at this year’s Effie Awards competition.
Ten Years was awarded top honours at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, evoking fears for its semi-autonomous territory as Beijing tightens its grip on it. Police thriller Port of Call also won, with actor Aaron Kwok being honored as best actor.
This year’s Hong Kong Prize for Young Artists competition opened to all secondary school students enrolled in Hong Kong on March 1. Students must be nominated by their teachers and complete an entry process online before the submission deadline of September 16. Winners will then travel to Hong Kong for an immersive cultural experience as they engage with local communities through artistic creation.
The Hong Kong Prize (HK Prize) is one of Hong Kong’s premier art and literary awards, celebrating excellence in art and literary writing since 1996. Organisers are committed to supporting arts through various initiatives like Young Artists Fund and Prize for Young Artists – first launched in 1996 – along with ICAS’ biennial Hong Kong Book Prize since 1997; more than 20,000 scholars, civil society representatives, practitioners from around the globe attended ICAS conventions each time as a result of this competition! Additionally, this year saw ICAS introduce their latest award: Prize for Books on Global Hong Kong Studies which joins ICAS’ family of awards.
