As part of his four-day visit to Singapore, Prince William will join those from across the world working to address some of our planet’s most pressing environmental challenges. He will meet President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loon as well as visiting Istana Palace and one of Singapore’s oldest heritage sites (The Istana palace) underlining his theme of repairing our planet by lighting green the world’s largest indoor waterfall at HSBC Rain Vortex; additionally meeting Earthshot 2023 winners to hear how they are scaling their innovative ideas/solutions
William will attend the United for Wildlife summit, featuring law enforcement agencies, conservation groups and corporations – including several global companies – all working to preserve our natural environment. After this, he will meet Singaporeans to learn how they are helping preserve it, while taking part in some dragon boating which has become popular sport throughout Singapore and around the world. Finally he’ll use his royal connections to support their work.
At the annual Singapore Prize awards ceremony, Prince Charles will present five businesses with the Brand Champion Award – which recognizes firms with strong brand identities in their industries. One such firm this year was Gunnlaugur Erlendsson’s Tyre Company which designed sustainable electric vehicle tyres which reduce pollution. Gunnlaugur Erlendsson said he was overjoyed to welcome Prince Charles back home and see him “follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps in pledgeing to repair our planet”.
At this year’s event, Singaporean small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and non-governmental organisations were recognized through the Business Excellence Award established in 2002 to foster an atmosphere of continuous improvement within local firms. Co-organised by ASME Singapore and Lianhe Zaobao, Samaritans of Singapore received this year’s Business Excellence Award as part of a suicide-prevention agency.
Singapore Literature Prize returned to its biennial format this year with 49 titles written in Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil – 32 less titles were selected than last time as the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic had an effect on publishing here. Furthermore, competition organizers created a category specifically dedicated to translation work this time.
At this year’s Marina Bay Sands theatre ceremony, celebrities including actor Yen and South African actress Mbatha were in attendance, dressed according to the sustainability theme by wearing old suits made from organic cotton and linen as part of a sustainability initiative.
