The Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Prize is one of the premier awards in Asia. Recognizing scientific research with global impact and encouraging young scientists to pursue careers in science, the prize offers both a monetary prize as well as the opportunity for conducting their research in Hong Kong.
Nominees for this year’s prize include activists fighting for freedom and democracy – some even imprisoned or arrested; as well as social justice initiatives like sheltering homeless adults through charity. Their stories “show us how human spirits can overcome repression and hardship”, according to University of California Riverside professor Perry Link and Hong Kong Prize organizer.
15 academics from 10 nations composed a letter accompanying their nomination and likened five imprisoned Hong Kong pro-democracy leaders to Nazi critic Carl von Ossietzky, Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov and Polish politician Lech Walesa who died while imprisoned – each receiving their own Nobel Peace Prize award – thus emphasizing their highest moral aspirations as human beings. A Nobel Peace Prize would acknowledge their heroic work while upholding humanity’s ideals, they wrote.
Winners of the Hong Kong Prize will be recognized at an awards ceremony held in Hong Kong and granted access to premier research facilities within the city, in addition to attending relevant international conferences and seminars related to their field of work. It is one of Asia’s most esteemed awards and can open doors to numerous opportunities for winners.
