How to Apply For a Sidney Prize

There are countless individuals all around the world working hard to make an impactful difference for humanity, and their efforts should be recognized in some form. A Sydney Prize can serve as one way of doing just that – these prestigious awards provide a wealth of benefits to their winners while inspiring more to join their cause. Before submitting an application for any prize or award it’s essential that applicants understand all rules and regulations associated with that award before submitting an application for consideration.

Sydney prizes offer something for everyone, and each has its own criteria for who should receive them. For instance, the Sydney Peace Prize recognizes those working towards peace and freedom in their home countries; it was given this year to Nazanin Boniadi for promoting human rights and women’s rights in Iran.

The Hillman Prize is another Sydney prize awarded by the Sidney Hillman Foundation to recognize journalists and writers pursuing social justice and public policy for the common good. Awarded every month, this prize is open to journalists who publish articles in American newspapers, magazines, or news websites.

David Brooks of The New York Times chose two long-form essays by Hilton Als and Ed Yong that had appeared in The New York Times for consideration of the 2020 Sidney Awards. “How the US Can Turn Its Back on Racism” won in nonfiction category while “Why the World Is Breaking Apart into Civil War” took home top honors in essay category – both articles were featured prominently within its pages.

The Dartmouth Distinguished Writing Awards are scholarships presented annually to undergraduate students who have produced outstanding papers over the course of an academic year. These awards honor Professor Sidney Cox, who had an enormously positive effect on thousands of Dartmouth students both inside and outside the classroom. Sophia Jactel from art history won this year with her paper entitled ‘Domesticity and Diversions: Josef Israels’ Smoker as a Symbol of Peasant Culture and Home in Nineteenth-Century Holland.”

Other notable Sydney prizes include the PEN/Sidney Taylor Manuscript Award, given annually at the National Association of Scholars National Conference to graduate-level writing displaying exceptional levels of integrity and originality. Winners are announced each year during this competition; several manuscripts published following this competition can now carry the PEN/Sidney Taylor seal as proof.

The Overland Neilma Sydney Short Story Prize is an annual writing contest sponsored by Overland magazine and the Neilma Sidney Fund, with submissions judged blind. The winning submission will receive a cash prize of $5,000 as well as publication in Overland magazine. This year’s judging panel consisted of Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh as judges for this year’s contest.
