The Dartmouth Distinguished Writing Awards are scholarships presented annually to undergraduate students who have produced outstanding papers over the course of an academic year. These awards honor Professor Sidney Cox, who had an enormously positive effect on thousands of Dartmouth students both inside and outside the classroom. Sophia Jactel from art history won this year with her paper entitled ‘Domesticity and Diversions: Josef Israels’ Smoker as a Symbol of Peasant Culture and Home in Nineteenth-Century Holland.”
Other notable Sydney prizes include the PEN/Sidney Taylor Manuscript Award, given annually at the National Association of Scholars National Conference to graduate-level writing displaying exceptional levels of integrity and originality. Winners are announced each year during this competition; several manuscripts published following this competition can now carry the PEN/Sidney Taylor seal as proof.
The Overland Neilma Sydney Short Story Prize is an annual writing contest sponsored by Overland magazine and the Neilma Sidney Fund, with submissions judged blind. The winning submission will receive a cash prize of $5,000 as well as publication in Overland magazine. This year’s judging panel consisted of Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh as judges for this year’s contest.
