The 2024 Singapore Prize Shortlist

Singapore has achieved remarkable success and the rest of the world is eager to learn from it, which can be seen by its remarkable success story and the huge interest surrounding its 2024 Singapore Prize, an international book award established in 2014. Established as an attempt to increase global understanding and appreciation of Singapore history and culture.

The 2024 prize was open to works of non-fiction or fiction from any country that addressed some aspect of Singaporean history, selected by an independent panel of judges. Multimedia works such as films or comics may also qualify for this award.

This year’s shortlist includes several books that challenge the notion that history can only be understood through big players’ lives. One book chronicles five decades in the life of an average Singaporean family; another looks at local community efforts following natural disaster.

Finalist books range from an analysis of Singapore’s role in the global economy, using data to improve city building, and an account of how a small team of police officers saved lives during one of Singapore’s darkest hours by responding swiftly and successfully. They were chosen due to their ability to tell an engaging narrative with wide appeal.

Earthshot Week will showcase various projects, beyond books. More than 1000 global leaders, investors and businesses from around the world will converge in Singapore for Earthshot Week to explore exciting opportunities with TEP winners and finalists who present innovative solutions that address critical environmental issues, while showing us all how we can work together towards repairing our planet.

Prince William of Great Britain joined celebrities including actress Cate Blanchett and actors Donnie Yen, Lana Condor, and Nomzano Mbatha at a ceremony honoring winning climate solutions such as solar-powered dryers for food waste reduction, restoring Andean forests, deterring illegal fishing practices and combating food waste to demonstrate there remains hope as we combat climate change. He stated the winning ideas ranged from solar dryers for combatting food waste reduction, combatting food waste by targeting retail outlets directly at supermarket chains to solar dryers for combatting food waste reduction as well as restoration of Andean forests that restores Andean forests as deterring illegal fishing- which showed hope remains even as we confront climate change head on.
