Are you in Hong Kong looking for a refreshing dip this summer? Public pools provide plenty of aquatic fun activities suitable for all ages – including water slides, fountains and splash buckets – at an affordable rate. Weekday rates average out at HK$17; weekend rates tend towards 19; concessionary or free rates apply (such as students, those 60 years old and above, those with disabilities etc). Outdoor pools typically open between 15th April and end October while indoor facilities operate year-round but typically close for maintenance three times each year.

Public swimming pools in Hong Kong are administered by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), consisting of 44 public swimming pools spread across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Recently the department has come under pressure to reduce costs and has reduced lifeguard staff numbers on duty resulting in some going on strike.

Since 2004, LCSD has reduced their pool lifeguard workforce from around 2,400 to 1,580, leading to severe strain on those remaining and several strikes over time. Unfortunately, things do not look likely to improve anytime soon as plans exist to close some popular and high traffic swimming pools by the LCSD.
